The debate about erotica & pornography. And why I'm in the middle of this mess.

Unfortunately, mainstream society thinks porn and erotica are about as different as working in a hardware store, and then getting a job selling hammers. This is why I believe they are not.

The Definition of Erotica.

Erotica (from the Greek "eros /desire") is any artistic work that deals substantively with erotically stimulating or sexually arousing subject matter.

Erotica has high-art aspirations, differentiating it from commercial pornography or film making.

Erotica vs pornography

A distinction is often made between erotica and pornography, although some viewers may not distinguish between them. Pornography's objective is the graphic depiction of sexually explicit scenes so as to arouse a quick, intense reaction.

Additionally, pornography is often exploitative or degrading.

My Position:

Having been taken down by two video hosting sites already for being too pornographic, and taken down from one porn site for being 'not explicit enough', I feel the need to set the record straight on a number of issues regarding my intent to make and show erotic films.

I do not make pornography - as it generally depicts scenes in a way that is degrading to women and, less frequently, to men. It tends to perpetuate the myth that rape and sexual assault are appropriate forms of behavior.

Erotica, on the other hand, seeks to tell a story that involves sexual themes. Sexually explicit scenes in these films serve a secondary role to the plot. Erotic film displays sexually explicit scenes in a more realistic and equal fashion that is not degrading to either gender.

I also try to ensure that every film I make has the highest quality production values so as to be beautiful, and celebrate the body of a woman as a source of art and desire.

The Future:

At the moment I am caught between a rock and a hard place.

Firstly, my work is not explicit enough to be hosted by porn sites - and I don't want to be hosted on porn sites anyway. It's a bad fit for everyone. Secondly, my work is too sexual to be hosted by mainstream sites.

I have fallen into a crack between legal definitions. For the moment.

My unclassifiable erotic style is going 15 rounds with the Muhammad Ali of tired old pornography stereotypes.

But I have been preparing for this my whole life. I can fight. Or I can run up the white page of surrender - thereby ensuring that nothing changes. Cheesy bad porn will have won again.

I hate the thought of that.

Even if it is through sheer obstinacy, I will overcome these roadblocks. If only for the reason that I have got a lot of dogged determination that has built up in my scar tissue over time.

As Albert Einstein once said "Reality is just an illusion, although it is a persistant one".

I choose to believe that beauty and taste will always prevail. And that perceptions will change.
